With less than 4 weeks until the show, I wanted to offer a glimpse at a previously-posted piece – Descent I, that I ended up revisiting and revising for the exhibition.
I was never satisfied with how the original painting turned out, but decided that my feelings at the time were merely a result of having stared at the piece for too long, or an incessant urge to always tweak my works upon their completion. With many more works queued for creation, I decided to step away from this painting while reassuring myself that it would grow on me over time – as was the case with other works…Yet, initially I was definitely more content with the other works that grew on me…
Ultimately, even after posting the piece on social media platforms, I could no longer ignore what was an itch of discontent in how the piece turned out. The time I spent working on other paintings allowed me to reflect on Descent I within the context of all the paintings I had worked on in he same time frame. From those reflections came a narrative for the series. In turn, the narrative that came forth brought me to the realisation that my unhappiness with Descent I was actually the result of a concept that had not fully formed, like an unfinished story, but was forced to fruition regardless.
In the end, revisiting the painting was a good reminder to always let an idea develop naturally.
…lesson learned.
